about

After two decades as a writer, "Heavy" is Benjamin James Howard's first release as a soloist. No pseudonym as camouflage, like his previous project, Pluto Revolts. The lyrical symbolism about overcoming one's own tendencies to over-analyze is not lost on him, considering the song (and many more that will soon follow it) is from a trove of material that sat for years in self-imposed limbo. Nonetheless, the song has taken on additional significance this year, while the recent political and social climate around the US has occupied far too many of our collective brainwaves, it would seem he's not the only one "waiting to be free from thinking too heavy."

lyrics

Space, if you’re asking me, is bullshit
It’s only in place to prove we’re farther apart than we know it
And time, if you’re asking me, is a lie
It’s only there to move us faster and faster, filed in a straight line

And it feels right as it should be
And it’s real, real as it could be
But the weight on my brain is unusually heavy
So I’m waiting, waiting to be free from thinking too heavy

And faith, if you’re asking me, it’s a shame
To trust somebody more than you trust in yourself, just so you can feel safe
But I, I don’t mind
I’ve stopped, stopped trying to understand it

And it feels right as it should be
And it’s real, real as it could be
But the weight on my brain is unusually heavy
So I’m waiting, waiting to be free from thinking too heavy

The weight that’s on my brain is more than I can take
The weight that’s on my brain, no

And it feels right as it should be
And it’s real, real as it could be
But the weight on my brain is unusually heavy
So I’m waiting, waiting to be free from thinking too heavy
Thinking too heavy
Thinking too heavy

about

Benjamin James Howard Cincinnati, Ohio

Touring before even having his driver's license (including a stint in Japan as a senior in high school) and signing to a major label at 19 could have launched his career much earlier. But instead of letting cynicism from early let-downs break his spirit, this former pop-punk/alt-rocker has only ever used it as fuel to his creative fire, focusing his motivations inward to appease himself above all. ... more
